Practicing Caring

by Ryan Krzykowski

First thing — I’m guessing many of you are like me and have friends/family in the Los Angeles area.  The stories and images of the devastation caused by these fires are hard to digest, and my heart is with the people of California.  As the weeks go by and stories emerge, there will be opportunities to highlight examples of triumph over tragedy.  I’m sure of it.

Last week, Alec dropped our latest podcast interview with mental performance coach and former pro basketball player Lindsey Wilson.  It was a fantastic conversation.  We got introduced to Lindsey by way of a mutual connection with good friend of CFC John O’Sullivan, and the 33 minutes we recorded with Lindsey is right up there with the best content we’ve ever rolled out on the pod.  I hope you’ll check it out.

We hit on a variety of topics and had a great synergy with Lindsey throughout the discussion, and one idea in particular really jumped out at me.  It will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with CFC that we believe one of the best things about sports is that they provide a training ground for learning life lessons.  If we aren’t careful, however, that idea of life lessons through sports can easily become watered down or cliché to the point that meaning is lost.  Hearing Lindsey talk about how sports can help us learn to “practice caring” was an eye opener.  She talked about how one of the best things about sports is how we can “make sports mean so much while understanding that it doesn’t actually mean anything”.  That idea is incredibly intriguing to me, and provides language I’ve been seeking for basically my whole life.  Why do I care so much about this thing that I know doesn’t actually matter?  Probably because we are designed and created to care — and just as Lindsey spoke about, sports can provide a safe place to practice caring deeply.  In our conversation, Lindsey digs into that idea even more, and I’d encourage you to check it out.

Many thanks to Lindsey for joining us on the podcast.
