The Lowest Place
by Ryan Krzykowski
A few days ago I read an article entitled “Humble Honor” on the daily devotional app called Our Daily Bread. Focusing on a passage from Luke 14, we see Jesus instructing dinner guests to “take the lowest place” and wrap up the passage by saying, “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (v. 11).
This teaching is a tough one, because I don’t really care for the lowest place, and humbling myself doesn’t sound too good at first either. But upon further reflection, humility is kind of like a key that unlocks our ability to receive God’s wisdom and grace. And if I’m too proud to receive His guidance, how can I hope to lead others effectively? So while at first blush humility can be a tough sell, a willingness to move away from arrogance is my only shot at fulfilling God’s purpose for my life. I don’t have all the answers. I need to experience and benefit from the talents and abilities of others. I can’t do this on my own. We are designed to live as one body with many parts. James reminds us that “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (4:6)
