Superpower

by Ryan Krzykowski

Around five years ago, Alec and I put together a workbook called “Coaching With Purpose”.  We worked hard on that thing, and were proud of it.  Hundreds of those books have been distributed, and hopefully most of them were utilized effectively.  We were able to lead dozens of coaches through the CWP process, both in groups and individually.  On the cover of the book you can read the tagline, “Discovering and Living Out Your WHY”, and that’s the focus of the CWP process.  We are in this to help coaches develop answers to the simple yet essential questions, “Why do I coach?” and “How will I define and measure success?”

Alec and I have never pretended to be innovators in this area: we’ve borrowed and built upon the work of Joe Ehrmann, John O’Sullivan, Rod Olson and many more.  We remain committed to the idea that athletic coaches have an opportunity and obligation to use their incredible influence to positively impact lives and enhance our communities.

Using the CWP workbooks for the past five years, we have discovered they can be useful tools.  Coaches continue to remind us that having their purpose in front of them provides a level of clarity and focus in a way they’ve never experienced before.  We are proud of the work we’ve done and grateful for the ways it’s helped people.  We’ve also realized that the original book wasn’t perfect.  There were a handful of lessons that we thought could use an edit for one reason or another.  So this past summer, that’s what we’ve done.  There is a 2.0 version of Coaching With Purpose that’s now available.  To be clear, it’s not a new book — don’t get one and be disappointed that it’s largely the same as the old one.  At the same time the edits are significant, and if it’s been a while since someone has gone through CWP, this might be a great time to do it again.  And maybe this time, with a colleague or friend who is new to CWP.

Last weekend I was reading a book called Chasing Influence by Troy Urdahl, and was struck by this line: “Knowing your purpose is like having a real-life superpower”.  I couldn’t agree more.  I’ve found it to be true myself for nearly 14 years, and I’m certainly not the only one.  If you’d like to get your hands on a book or set of books, please reach out.  We’ve got them at no cost to you, and would gladly send them out and be available to provide support for anyone who is serious about discovering and living out their WHY.
